2009 Southern Regionals Championships
The 2009 Southern Regional’s were a great success and the hosting club Kentucky Lake Ski Nuts did a great job of showing Southern hospitality at its best. We had a total of 266 entries with 248 Slalom rides, 119 Trick rides and 88 Jump rides.
The Judges Meeting was held at the home of Carl & Lil Marquess. Their home made for an excellent place for the officials of the Southern Region to renew friendships, many of these friends we only see a few times a year.
The tournament started at 8:00 the next morning and Assistant Chief Judge Tim Denny was proud that his lake started on time. The officials’ rest area at the site was well stocked with plenty of drinks and snacks including fresh fruit, cakes, chips snack bars, and most any other item you wanted. We had an excellent choice of lunches every day and if you were working an event, lunch was delivered to you.
I would like to thank all of our Judges. Leon Larson, Chief Judge and his ACJ’s Tim Denny and Joel Norton for keeping the tournament running on time. Appointed Judges Kirby Whetsel, Bill Wenner, John Shipp, Leza Harrison, Bobby Hill, Ray Crenshaw, Joe Burkhead, Scott Snape, Robert Harris, Ralph Winn, Mack Sparks, Carl Marquess, Sara Lemley and Bob Schouten. We had many volunteer Judges including Cathy Burkhead, Bill Colp who was also our Chief Registrar, Sheryl Fry, Mark Griffin, David Hensley, Ed Hickey, Jerry Jackson, Donna Laskey, Leon Leonard, George Levin, Dennis Longo, Cathy Lund, Nancy Luzoro, Jody Seal, Jim Sheaffer, Donna Switzer, Jeanette Van Akelijen, Julie Yancy and Carey Zimlich.
Chief Scorer Mark Dingeman was assisted by Scorers Linda Sparks, Debbie Kern, Anne Henley, and Jeff Clark. Other volunteers included Sheryl Fry, Elaine Guarino, Jennifer Hunter, Cathy Lund, Nancy Luzoro, Heather Stallings, Jeanette Van Akelijen, Teddy Wenner, and Cindy Wilson.
Chief Driver Gordon West along with appointed drivers Lyman Hardy, Jody Seal, Ham Wallace, and Greg Webb did a great job keeping the boat straight down the course and the tournament moving along. They even let Mark Griffin, Jim Powers, and Carey Zimlich in on the fun.
The three most thankless jobs of the tournament are TC, Announcers, and Safety. Eddie Roberts did the TC duties with help from John Worden before he had to leave to see his son, Zack ski in the World Championships in Canada. Zack tricked 7340 Points and after the 1st day is in 2nd Place. The Chief Announcer was Tommy Newman and was helped by John Fowler, Hank Longo, Ryan Paul and Tadd Schreiber
. Big Bad Bob Archambeau was Chief Safety and had assistance from volunteers Robert Blair, John Harris, Pam Harris, Ed Henley, Tina Hill, Eric Kelly, George Levin, Pam McNairy, Jerry Moore, Diane Pastoor, Heather Stallings, and Craig Worley.
Joe Burkhead & Bob Harris, as Tournament Co-Chairmen lead the Kentucky Lake Ski Nuts before and during the tournament in preparing the site for the Southern Regional Skiers, the officials accommodations were above and beyond the standard, they all received Suites for their accommodations. The registration process was administered by Bill Colp and it went flawlessly do to the attention to detail and effort that he put in. In fact every club member of the Kentucky Lake Ski Nuts should be congratulated on the effort they made to host this tournament.
I had a great time at the 2009 Southern Regional’s hosted by the Kentucky Lake Ski Nuts and look forward to going back for a future Regional’s. Next time I will take my jumpers and ski.
